MIDLAND – The Brownwood Lady Lions soccer season reached its conclusion in the second round of the Region I-4A playoffs Tuesday afternoon at Grande Communication Stadium, where the San Elizario Lady Eagles earned an 8-0 victory.
“We came out slow and it progressed through the game,” said Lady Lions first-year head coach Alexis Mosqueda. “It was a tough game against a tough opponent and they came out and did what they needed to do and we didn’t.”
The Lady Lions – coming off a 10-0 bi-district win over Snyder in which Brownwood tallied its first goal within 16 seconds – fell behind San Elizario 6:33 into the contest. The Lady Eagles (15-1) tacked on their second goal just 2:49 later, and Brownwood (11-5) never recovered.
“That was the hardest thing,” Mosqueda said in reference to San Elizario’s quick start. “It wasn’t very often this season that we had to come out and dig ourselves out of a hole. We just weren’t able to do that today.”
The goals continued to pile up for San Elizario, which led 5-0 at halftime. The Lady Eagles scored again with 24:38, 17:09 and 10:20 left in the first half.
“They had a lot of speed up top and their passes were spot on,” Mosqueda said. “They found feet really well. We knew they were going to be able to pass the ball well, and they were tough to defend.”
San Elizario added three more goals in the second half with 22:28, 18:32, and 2:15 remaining in the contest.
Despite the loss, Mosqueda stated she was proud of the Lady Lions’ accomplishments in 2021 and of the foundation that was established this season.
“We had a great season overall,” Mosqueda said. “I tear up every time I talk about the seniors, but I just wanted to give them a good season and I hope that I somehow touched their lives and that they can take whatever I taught them and move forward. But we’ll be back next season and we’ll be ready to work.”
