SAN ANGELO – The Padilla Poll Class 4A Division I 10th-ranked Brownwood Lions scored on their first nine possessions, including all eight in the first half, and jumped out to a 45-point lead by halftime en route to a 60-13 drubbing of the San Angelo Lake View Chiefs Thursday night in District 2-4A Division I gridiron action.
“Our focus coming in was to play our game, play at our level and not the level of your opponent,” said Lions fifth-year head coach Sammy Burnett. “Elite teams play at their level all the time, use the gifts that the good Lord has give you, and maximize them to the fullest, and I thought we did that tonight.”
The Lions (6-2, 2-0) – who scored their most points in a game since a 61-14 bi-district triumph over Fort Worth Castleberry in 2019 – rushed for 354 of their 451 total yards, and scored seven times on the ground.
Behind the play of Isaac Gray, Roan Aguinaga, Chris Robinson, Damian Sanchez and Slayde Espinoza, Konlyn Anderson churned out 156 yards and five touchdowns on 17 carries, while quarterback Ike Hall chipped in 126 yards and two scores on 10 totes. As a team, the Lions averaged 12.2 per carry on 29 rushes.
“When you have a dual threat quarterback like Ike and he’s able to pull it out and make yards, then you can lose focus on the running back, but you can’t lose focus on Konlyn Anderson,” Burnett said. “He’s the bell cow for us. He’s fast, a powerful runner, and he gets yards after contact. Trying to stop him, being able to close on him, and then Ike pulling the ball and making yards with his legs is special. When you have that tandem going it’s pretty tough.”
Through the air, Hall connected on 6 of 13 passes for 97 yards with a 45-yard scoring strike to Jason Jackson, who finished with a pair of grabs for 55 yards. Thad Hinds hauled down three receptions for 25 yards and Taylor Bessent nabbed a 17-yard reception.
“We were able to run the ball whenever we wanted and we were able to throw the ball whenever we wanted,” Burnett said. “We go as our quarterback goes and we also goes as our offensive line goes, and I thought they did a fine job controlling the line of scrimmage up front. That enabled us to move the ball on the ground and that just opened up the passing game, and we have four wide receivers that can play. That puts defenses in a bind when you’re able to execute properly.”
Defensively, the Lions yielded 238 yards – 129 passing and 109 rushing – and recovered a pair of fumbles, but the final numbers do not reflect the dominance Brownwood displayed early.
Quinten McCarty led the Lions with eight tackles, including three for loss, and a fumble recovery; Hayden Noe added eight tackles with one for loss; Sam Kallman finished with seven; Chance Jones recorded six with a sack; Jake Jetton finished with six and one for loss; Stevie Ramirez logged five tackles with one for loss; Brayden Daub notched five tackles and pounced on loose ball; Tristan Salinas notched five with one for loss and one sack; Trent Loftin, Hayden Deen, and Azariah Dillard finished with four tackles apiece; Jaylan Brown and Bryan Osbourn chipped in three each; Cole Miller, Jordyn Nickerson, Noah Barron, and Isaiah Rodriguez each registered two tackles; and Logan Knight, Morsello Hooker, and Jordan Leach were credited with one apiece.
Brownwood’s eight first-half scoring drives started on average at the Lake View 42 yard line, as the Lions generated 326 yards en route to 52-7 halftime cushion.
Meanwhile, the Chiefs produced 123 yards at halftime but 92 of those came on two snaps – a 60-yard run that set up their first touchdown, and a 32-yard pass. The remaining 28 snaps in the first half netted Lake View just 31 yards.
The Lions opened the scoring after a three-and-out from Lake View, needing just five plays to travel 56 yards as Anderson scored on a 3-yard carry just 2:37 into the contest. Hall’s 31-yard scamper on the first snap, and a 17-yard screen pass to Bessent set up the score.
Brownwood took a 14-0 lead at 6:51 of the first period on a 45-yard toss from Hall to Jackson, which capped a three-play, 48-yard drive after a 15-yard punt.
At the 3:20 mark of the first, Hall scored on a 1-yard plunge to finish off a five-play, 40-yard trek after another 15-yard punt.
Another Lake View three-and-out followed, and the Lions journeyed 48 yards in just three snaps, with Anderson rumbling into the end zone from 19 yards out at the 1:16 mark of the opening period to boost the advantage to 28-0.
Lake View’s next snap resulted in a fumble recovered by McCarty, which set up a five-play, 25-yard drive the ended with an Anderson 1-yard touchdown carry for a 35-0 lead with 11:10 left before halftime.
Brownwood’s sixth possession was the first that did not reach the end zone, still Junior Martinez converted a 28-yard field goal to stretch the advantage to 38-0 with 7:56 left before the break. The drive began at the Lake View 17 after a poor snap on a fourth down punt resulted in a loss of 10 yards, but the Lions could not further capitalize.
Lake View, on its ensuing possession, used a 60-yard sprint by Ricky Ramirez to move into the red zone, where Ramirez later caught an 8-yard touchdown pass from Bryce Medley to close the gap to 38-7 with 6:11 left before halftime.
The Lions were able to tack on two more scores before intermission as Hall’s 20-yard touchdown scamper at the 4:34 mark capped a five-play, 39-yard drive.
Then, with six seconds left, Anderson barreled into the end zone from 26 yards out to conclude a five-play, 64-yard march – Brownwood’s longest of the night.
The Lions opened the second half with the ball after a failed Lake View onside kick attempt, and Brownwood’s 46-yard, four-play drive found the end zone at the 9:57 mark on a 3-yard carry by Anderson. An errant snap on the extra point forced Hall, the holder, to scramble as he found Bessent in the end zone for the successful two-point conversion and a 60-7 lead just 2:03 into the second half.
The Lions had two more opportunities to score, but a third quarter 48-yard field goal attempt was blocked, and Brownwood coughed up the ball on the Lake View 15 on a late fourth-quarter fumble.
Brownwood’s defense turned away a goal-to-goal opportunity for Lake View in the fourth quarter when Daub jarred the ball free from Medley, causing a fumble that Daub recovered.
However, Lake View scored once more on the final snap of the night, an 11-yard toss from Medley to Davashtian Manley for the final 47-point margin.
Next week, Brownwood hosts Lubbock Estacado in the home finale. Estacado (3-3, 0-0) and Andrews will square off in Lubbock Friday night (5-2, 1-0).
“We’ll take a group of coaches and head to Lubbock and scout those next two opponents, so we’ll get a chance to see them both live,” Burnett said. “We’ll start work as a staff tomorrow, come back and make sure everything is done Saturday and we’ll be back on schedule Sunday and ready to go Monday morning.”
