Head coach Heather Hohertz was pleased with her team’s effort in the rematch, but the Brownwood Lady Lions were again no match for the top-ranked Glen Rose Lady Tigers, who chalked up a 68-24 victory Tuesday night at Warren Gym as the second half of District 6-4A basketball action began for both teams.
“My kids battled tonight,” Hohertz said. “I thought it was a different team from when we went over there and played. I can’t knock my kids’ effort, that’s just a really good ball club with some really big girls.”
The Lady Lions (18-11, 2-3) trailed Glen Rose (27-3, 5-0) by a 25-4 count after one quarter, 36-11 at halftime, and 54-16 through three periods.
“As much as I stress blocking out, they’re extremely hard to block out,” Hohertz said. “We gave up 13 offensive rebounds in the first half but just 17 for the game, so I thought my girls responded to that at halftime.”
The Lady Lions shot 20 percent (9 of 44) from the floor and 33 percent (3 of 9) at the free throw line, to go along with 16 rebounds, 5 steals and 19 turnovers.
Hannah Deen finished with 10 points for Brownwood trailed by Trinity Roberts with six, Kimber Green and Miranda Northcutt with three apiece and Icess Hall with two points.
“Hannah played with four fouls the entire second half and was able to keep from fouling out,” Hohertz said. “She took the ball to the basket and got back in the rhythm. Trinity tried to body their girls as best as she could down there.”
Glen Rose received 21 points from Grace Booth, 11 from Lily Melton, nine each from Abigale Bunt and Alexis Rynders, seven from Addison Treppa and six points from Aimee Flippin.
The Lady Lions are back in action at 5:45 p.m. Friday at Mineral Wells (1-4 in district), which they defeated 44-18 in the first half of district action. Mineral Wells fell to Stephenville, 35-30, Tuesday night.
“We haven’t played particularly well away from Warren Gym,” Hohertz said. “We’re going to have to be able to handle that. To be where we want to be at the end of district, the next three games are big for us.”
