The Brownwood Lions soccer started the second half of District 5-4A competition with a 3-1 defeat at the hands of the Lampasas Badgers Tuesday night at Gordon Wood Stadium – their fifth district loss in the last six outings.
Junior Martinez mustered the only goal for Brownwood, which was coming off a 3-1 home win over Little River Academy this past Friday. The Lions defeated Lampasas in the first district go-round by a 2-0 count on Jan. 26.
“Obviously this is a very devastating loss, very upsetting,” said Lions head coach Michael Westerman. “We came in here with a lot of energy, we knew this was a very important game that we needed to get across the line, especially starting the second half of district and how we ended the first round. It’s very difficult to lose that game. There were some positives, but there’s a lot that we need to work through as well.”
The Lions slipped to 4-8-1 overall and 2-5 in district competition, with a 7 p.m. Friday trip to 5-4A leader Salado (16-1-1, 6-0-1) next on the schedule.
“We know we’re a technical team, we know we’re capable of playing good soccer,” Westerman said. “We’ve been in a bit of a rut and I think we’re letting the emotions of the game and the number of the points in the district and the positioning of where we lie play too much of a factor. It’s affecting our game and we need to take a step back and think about why we’re playing the sport, and that we enjoy the sport and we’re competitors and want to compete. I feel like we’re straying away from the love of the game and being able to play with passion.”
