ABILENE – Challenging the District 3-4A champion Snyder Tigers, the District 4-4A fourth-seeded Brownwood Lions faced a first-half scoring barrage they could not overcome in a 5-1 loss in the Region I-4A bi-district round of the boys soccer state playoffs Friday at Shotwell Stadium.
The Lions (2-15) tallied their only goal with 2:34 left in the first half as Caleb Nelson scored off an assist from Tony Valenciano.
Snyder struck first with 26:11 left in the first half as a foul in the box set up a penalty kick.
The Lions appeared to tie the game on a goal by Blake Brasher at the 17:10 mark, but Brownwood was whistled for being offsides. Just 22 seconds later the Tigers traveled the length of the field to extend the lead to 2-0 and the Lions never recovered.
Snyder scored again with 5:04 left in the first half and once more at the 3:14 mark before the Lions lit up the scoreboard.
In the second half, the only scoring belonged to Snyder on a goal with 17:22 left in the contest.
