In their first game at Warren Gym under head coach Will Parker, the Brownwood Lions tallied the first 21 points and never looked back in a 100-61 rout of the Alvarado Indians Monday afternoon.
“This is great for those guys. It looked like we came out today and were playing with a lot more confidence than we have been playing with,” Parker said. “I told them before the game we really want to get this game going up tempo and we set the tone from the beginning, and that was fun to see.”
Five Lions finished in double figures led by Christian Kinzler with 23 points, Luke Moss with 22, Jakob Hataway with 17, Ike Hall with 14 and Bryson Monroe with 12 points. Hayden Noe, Thad Hinds, and Seth Oines chipped in two points apiece and Ryder Lancaster knocked down a free throw.
“It’s nice to be able to rotate guys in and look at different lineups and get some guys in there that don’t get to handle it is as much,” Parker said. “We were able to get Ike in there to handle the ball a little bit more so hopefully he’s starting to feel a little bit more confident.”
The Lions (1-2) forced turnovers on each of Alvarado’s first five possessions, all of which were converted into points, as Brownwood led 10-0 just 2:33 into the contest. By the end of the opening quarter, the lead stood at 30-7. Then, the Lions buried four consecutive three-pointers to begin the second period as the advantage ballooned to 42-7 with 6:23 left before halftime.
“Jakob was one of the guys that was knocking them down,” Parker said of the three-point barrage. “That’s just hard work paying off. The guy is here at 5:15 a.m. every morning. It’s nice because the other guys know that’s why those shots are going in. Having a guy shooting those in just opens up everything inside for us.”
The Lions carried a 56-30 lead into the locker room at halftime and were in front 81-38 through three frames. Brownwood hit the century mark with 2:25 left on a pair of free throws by Hall.
“The 100 points is nice but we pride ourselves on defense and hopefully we can limit our turnovers in the future and try and hold teams below what we gave up today,” Parker said.
Sha’marin Lee finished with 17 points for Alvarado while Wyatt Land added 14 points.
The Lions are off until Tuesday, Nov. 30 when they visit Jim Ned.
