Knotted in a scoreless tie until the last seven minutes of the contest, the Brownwood Lions surrendered goals with 6:08 and 15 seconds remaining to suffer a 2-0 loss to Gatesville Wednesday night in the District 5-4A soccer and regular season home finale.
“It’s very difficult to deal with, especially on the boys’ Senior Night,” said Lions head coach Michael Westerman. “It’s a tough way to go out, but we played extremely well, especially the first 40 minutes. We came out flat the second half and unfortunately we weren’t able to stay very consistent and we were punished for it. That’s sort of been our season this year, we’ve been playing well but results haven’t been falling our way. It’s a tough thing to deal with and reassess and figure out what the deal is.”
Despite several opportunities in the first half, the Lions were unable to find the net.
“We did an excellent job working the ball up the field, created a lot of great chances, and again it’s something that we’ve been struggling with all season and it’s that last step of putting the ball in the back of the net,” Westerman said. “Utlimately that’s what decides games, who can do that, and unfortunately we haven’t been able to do that.”
The playoff-bound Lions (5-10-1, 2-5) conclude the regular season at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Stephenville.
