The Brownwood Lady Lions came up short against the District 6-4A front-running Stephenville Honeybees, 25-16, 26-7, 25-11 in their next-to-last match of the regular season Tuesday night at Warren Gym.
“Stephenville is a just a really solid program and you can’t really take anything away from what they did,” said Lady Lions fourth-year head coach Allison Smith. “We didn’t got out and execute as well as what we should have and what we practiced and that’s the disappointment. It’s like our girls came out a little bit timid and not expecting to play well against them. Stephenville doesn’t really let you play your game so it’s a hard team to play against especially with the young team we have.”
Miranda Northcutt led the Lady Lions with three kills followed by one each from Ava Choate, Kassidy Wooten, Hannah Deen and Emma Ringer.
Aubrie Felux dished out three assists and Ringer contributed a pair.
Wooten and Aniah Hines both served aces for Brownwood.
Defensively, Wooten registered eight digs trailed by Ringer with seven, Choate with six, Felux with four, Hines and Deen with two apiece, and Talasia Green with one.
Hines and Green recorded one block each for the Lady Lions.
Despite the loss, the Lady Lions (4-22, 0-7) still have an opportunity to extend their season when they host Mineral Wells at 5 p.m. Friday in the home and regular season finale. With a victory, the Lady Lions would draw even with Mineral Wells for fourth place and thus force a play-in match to determine District 6-4A’s final postseason berth.
“We’re more than capable of doing that, but it would have helped if we would have went out and taken care of business against Graham like we were capable of doing last Friday,” Smith said. “If we go out and play the game that we did last Friday with just a tad more consistency we should have a good chance.”
