The Brownwood Lady Lions’ roller coaster ride prior to the Christmas break concluded Monday afternoon at Warren Gym, as head coach Heather Hohertz’s squad rolled to a 65-24 win over San Angelo Lake View – their second-largest margin of victory this season.
The Lady Lions (12-7) shot 46 percent (25 of 54) from the floor and 42 percent (9 of 21) from beyond the three-point arc, while sinking just 40 percent (6 of 15) of their free throws. Brownwood also committed a season-low eight turnovers, pulled down 35 rebounds and forced 24 turnovers with 14 coming on steals.
“Our performance Friday (57-26 loss at Abilene Wylie) offensively was very disappointing,” Hohertz said. “We just challenged them in the locker room before the game to come out and finish the right way before we go into Christmas break. They responded pretty well.”
Five Lady Lions finished in double figures led by Kynslee Walker with 16 points and six assists, Kassidy Wooten with 12 points, Kimber Green – called up from the JV with Mady Pyle out with a concussion – with 11 points, Jaylen Savage with a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds, and Tessa Goodwin with 10 points and eight boards. Lilly Brasher, Lexi Greer, and Brianna Castaneda added two points apiece.
“The games we’ve been successful in this year that’s how it’s been,” Hohertz said of the balanced scoring attack. “This is the first team I’ve had where we’ve had guards and posts together that can score, usually it’s one or the other. I think they rallied behind that and stepped up.”
Defensively, the Lady Lions allowed just one point in the opening period and three in the third, as Brownwood owned a 16-1 edge after one frame, a 39-15 lead at halftime, and a 50-18 advantage going into the fourth period.
“They’re a hard team to guard,” Hohertz said of Lake View. “At times I thought we stood around, but for the most part we kept them in front of us. We didn’t allow too many offensive rebounds, and they stayed with their assignments for the most part.”
Lake View was led by Mikaila Wagner’s 13 points followed by Jackie Espinoza and Amber Garivay with three apiece, Kamryn Aguilar and Landra Williams with two apiece, and Yzabela Hernandez with one point.
The Lady Lions are off until they begin play in the three-day TexasBank Holiday Classic beginning Tuesday, Dec. 28.
“They played as a unit today and we just have to keep moving forward and quit the roller coaster,” Hohertz said. “Our defense is there for the most part, but we have to get our offense going consistently.”
