Trying to steal a win in the second half of District 6-4A volleyball action to keep their postseason hopes alive, the Brownwood Lady Lions were unable to derail the Glen Rose Lady Tigers in the first of four straight matches at Warren Gym, falling 25-14, 25-17, 25-9 Tuesday night.
The Lady Lions tallied the first five points of the opening set, but were unable to hang on to the momentum. In the second set, Brownwood trimmed a nine-point deficit to 20-16 before Glen Rose pulled away. Then in the finale, down 5-4, the Lady Lions witnessed Glen Rose reel off 16 straight points to put the set well out of reach.
“We changed our lineup a little bit, they’re still getting used to that but for the most part the girls adapted and looked better,” said Lady Lions fourth-year head coach Allison Smith. “It gave us some new energy and new things to look at, we just have to figure out a way to get it rolling. Glen Rose is really big on the net and strong, and you have to be consistent on your offense.”
Ava Choate led the Lady Lions with five kills followed by Miranda Northcutt with three, Emma Ringer with two, and Aubrie Felux, Kassidy Wooten and Hannah Deen with one apiece.
Ringer dished out six assists while Felux contributed one.
Deen served three aces while Felux and Ringer chipped in a pair each.
Defensively, Wooten logged 16 digs trailed by Deen and Choate with seven apiece, Ringer with five, Felux with three, Hines with two and Northcutt with one.
Northcutt and Felux each recorded a block.
“I really liked the fight in the first two sets,” Smith said. “No matter what was happening on the court we had energy and we were trying to find a way for things to happen. We had some really long rallies, but things just didn’t go our way.”
The Lady Lions (4-20, 0-5) are back in action at 4:30 p.m. Friday as they host Graham.
“I want to see more consistency like the way we played in the first two sets,” Smith said. “If we go out and play like that we have a good shot against Graham, which is a game that we desperately need.”
