The Brownwood Lady Lions began the second half of District 6-4A volleyball action Tuesday night at Warren Gym with a 25-8, 25-11, 25-12 loss to the Glen Rose Lady Tigers.
After a sluggish first set, the Lady Lions (7-24, 0-5) led early on in the second and third sets, but Glen Rose (22-15, 4-1) stormed back to compete the sweep.
“We came out a little bit slow, which we tend to do, but then they got a fire under them and started to play,” said Lady Lions first-year head coach Cheyanne Lovelady. “We worked on three separate rotations because we have some girls that won’t be playing Friday, so that was an adjustment we had to make. But overall, the girls did a good a job of taking that and being able to play at a high level.”
Despite the challenges the Lady Lions have faced in district competition, Lovelady is proud of her team for continuing the quest to improve with each performance.
“The girls are still working really hard,” Lovelady said. “We’re on a roller coaster right now. It’s hard to keep spirits up when you’re having a tough season, but the fact that they come in every day and work hard and continue to learn has just been a blessing.”
With Friday’s home finale against Mineral Wells taking place at 5 p.m. prior to the homecoming football game, Tuesday instead served as Senior Night as the Lady Lions honored Emma Ringer, Molly Oliver and Jaslin Jones for their contributions to the program.
“The seniors have done a really good job with stepping up and being leaders,” Lovelady said. “One didn’t even play last year, the other two didn’t play a whole lot, so for them to have a brand new coach, accept me and still be coachable as seniors has been a really good thing for our team.”
As for Tuesday’s action, Hannah Deen led the Lady Lions with four kills trailed by three apiece from Aniah Hines and Aubrie Felux, and two each from Ringer, Jones and Miranda Northcutt.
Ringer also distributed eight assists while Icess Hall and Arieseli Hernandez chipped in three apiece.
Felux and Ringer served the two Brownwood aces.
Defensively, Chloe Walls registered three digs trailed by two each from Jones and Oliver and one by Hall.
At the net, Hines, Northcutt and Trinity Roberts each recorded a block.
