Off to the best start in program history, the Brownwood Lady Lions soccer team played its first contest at Gordon Wood Stadium this season Friday night, where its eight-game win streak came to an end at the hands of Marble Falls, 1-0.
“It’s not the outcome we wanted, but I don’t think we played bad,” said Lady Lions head coach Alexis Walker. “The possession was definitely in our favor, we were moving the ball well, and up until this point we haven’t had trouble finishing the ball. But we have to capitalize on the opportunities we have when we have them, and we had multiple in the first half. Whenever we don’t capitalize and then have some miscommunication on defense in the second half, that’s how the score ends up 1-0.”
The Lady Lions (8-1) surrendered only their second goal of the season to Marble Falls (4-3-1) with 18:56 left in the game on a defensive breakdown.
“Our goal keeper was too far out and our center back was trying to deliver the ball to her feet,” Walker said. “It was miscommunication, she didn’t know where she was, but at end the end of the day we’ll learn from our mistakes.”
Offensively, Brownwood’s best chances to score came after allowing a goal as Braycee Lee’s 20-yard free kick with just over 13 minutes left bounced off the cross bar. Then, with just over eight minutes, Madison Weckwerth’s shot from 25 yards out suffered the same fate.
“To be a successful team you have to capitalize no matter who the opponent is,” Walker said. “They never gave up and continued to fight and they want to fight for the person next to them. That’s what I love about them. We just have to do a better job of capitalizing on opportunities. Everybody in transition needs to be up helping. When we have shots so close to the goal keeper, people have to be here waiting.”
The Lady Lions will be back in action at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday as they play host to Godley.
“It’s not the end of the world,” Walker said. “We needed to face some adversity and Marble Falls gave us some adversity. We’ll go back and look at the film but we can’t dwell on this one.”
