The Brownwood Lady Lions maintained their firm hold on third place in the District 5-4A soccer standings with the two opponents ahead of them coming up next, thanks to Friday night’s 1-0 victory over China Spring at Gordon Wood Stadium.
“The girls came out and played really hard,” said Lady Lions head coach Alexis Mosqueda. “The first half was definitely our better half tonight. We got a goal un the first 10 to 15 minutes and that set the tone for the game. I really like the way that we’re playing right now in the sense that we look like a team on the field and we’re playing like a team on the field. The one thing we do need to get better at is our composure on the field and not letting little things get into our heads. If we can let those things go we’ll be extremely successful.”
The Lady Lions (12-3-1, 6-2) recorded the game’s only goal just 12:02 into the contest as China Spring (12-8-2, 3-5) fell victim to the 97th goal in the career of Kennedi Johnson.
“Kennedi’s been on fire lately,” Mosqueda said. “Just have her perform the way she is, that’s what we need right now. With Salado and Stephenville coming up, we need her and Molly Oliver to perform up to the level I know they can play. I’m excited and looking forward to more good things from them.”
In the first meeting on Feb. 3 at China Spring, the Lady Lions trailed at halftime before rallying for a 2-1 victory.
Regarding the Lady Lions’ performance in the rematch, Mosqueda said, “We watched a lot of film and evaluated our first half the last time, and that was not our game at all. We talked about the things we could do better and really focused on that. We had a better look at the field tonight, we were calm and we came out with good attitudes and high energy.”
The Lady Lions have a district bye Tuesday, then host Salado (19-2, 6-1) at 7 p.m. Friday, March 3 and welcome Stephenville (14-0-1, 7-0) at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 7.
