The Brownwood Lady Lions put their two-game skid in the rear view mirror as they returned to the win column Tuesday night at Gordon Wood Stadium with a 2-0 triumph over the San Angelo Lake View Maidens.
After a scoreless first half, the Lady Lions (5-2) were able to find the net twice in the second half.
“They were playing a good defense on us,” Lady Lions first-year head coach Alexis Mosqueda said of Lake View. “A lot of our through balls for us that would normally go didn’t end up going. I told the girls we were going to have to come from the outside in and after we started doing that our shots started going in.”
The Lady Lions finally lit up the scoreboard with 31:54 left in the contest on the first of two goals by Molly Oliver, who also added some insurance with 23:45 remaining on the clock.
“Molly Oliver is on fire,” Mosqueda said. “She has been an all-star. She played volleyball and came into soccer right after it so I wasn’t really sure how she was going to perform. A lot of the girls got more touches than she did in the preseason, but she kept working and proved to me she could be on varsity and I think she’s going to be a great player for us.”
Despite being short-handed on defense, the Lady Lions were able to notch the shutout.
“I’m really proud of the defense and the way they stepped up because we’re missing one of our key defenders due to quarantine,” Mosqueda said. “The way that they’re playing together, a lot of them are finding their confidence again because they’re used to Dusty (Van Huss) being there to save all the balls. Hannah Allgood has really stepped up and been a leader for the younger girls.”
Overall, Mosqueda said, “We played great, we played as a team and I’m happy with the outcome.”
The Lady Lions are scheduled to be back in action at 7 p.m. Friday as they host Abilene Cooper.
