Playing without three starters due to illness, the Brownwood Lady Lions were unable to put away the San Angelo Lake View Maidens, who rallied twice Tuesday night at Gordon Wood Stadium to forge a 2-2 tie.
“In my eyes, it was a good game for us,” said Lady Lions third-year head coach Alexis Mosqueda. “Overall our girls played well. We’re going through some sickness now, we have some players with the flu, three starters were out tonight and there’s not many on the bench. It’s not the result that we wanted, but it’s not a loss, so we’ll move forward.”
The Lady Lions struck first just 5:02 into the contest as Ataleigh Constancio scored off an assist from Kennedi Johnson.
With 15:36 to go in the first half, Lake View answered to knot the score at 1.
The game remained tied until 18:31 was left in the contest as Molly Oliver assisted Johnson on the go-ahead goal, giving Brownwood a 2-1 cushion.
But again, Lake View clawed back and drew even at 2 with 12:20 left in the contest.
“It was back and forth, I believe the possession was 50-50, and definitely so in the second half,” Mosqueda said. “Lake View does a good job and they’re a really well-coached team. They played a really good game and hats off to them. They’re going to have a good season.”
Brownwood had a couple of scoring chances late but was unable to connect, but also turned away a few scoring opportunities for Lake View down the stretch.
The roller coaster nature of Tuesday’s game will aid Brownwood in future contests, Mosqueda added.
“To be able to come out and play a game like this without your normal lineup on the field, this was adversity thrown at us and we were able to figure some things out,” Mosqueda. “Our district is very, very tough, and we know we’ll have face more adversity ahead.”
The Lady Lions (5-1-1) will attempt to return to the win column when they visit Burnet at 6 p.m. Friday.
