On July 14, Cheyanne Lovelady was announced as the new head coach for the Brownwood Lady Lions volleyball program. Just over two weeks later, Lovelady and the Lady Lions took the court for the first time together during Monday’s initial two-a-day workouts of the season.
“It was a really fun day,” said Lovelady, who guided Bangs to the playoffs in two of her four seasons as head coach at her alma mater. “We had a lot more girls come out than anticipated so that’s really awesome. I’m giving them a lot of new information, a lot of new stuff, but they’re working really hard, absorbing it and learning quickly.”
Brownwood is coming off a 4-23 season, including an 0-8 mark against District 6-4A competition, but Lovelady already believes the Lady Lions should be a better squad in 2023.
“What stood out today is the potential for how far we can go,” Lovelady said. “We’ve got athletes and girls that are excited and want to be here, we as coaches have to invest in them and teach them the skills they need. They’re here, they want this, so they can be taught.”
The Lady Lions will compete in scrimmage action Friday at San Angelo Central, then compete in a dual match against Wall and Llano in Llano on Tuesday, Aug. 8 to open the season.
With eight days to go before the season opener, there is plenty of work that must still be done.
“It’s going to be hard because I haven’t really met any of the girls so everything is still new to me,” she said. “I’m still learning names, but we have to determine teams, that’s a big thing that we’ve got to get done. Other than that, we’re going to focus on basics and get everybody on the same page as far as what I’m expecting fundamentals wise.”]
