The Brownwood Lady Lions halted an eight-match skid Tuesday at Warren Gym, defeating Gatesville in four sets, 25-16, 21-25, 25-22, 25-22.
“It was a really hard-fought match and I’m proud of the way the girls came out and showed their tenacity,” said Lady Lions fourth-year head coach Allison Smith. “We’re a young team this year, but the more games we get under us the better we’re getting, the more consistency I’m seeing. They got chewed out a little in the second set, but they took it and stayed focus and they did the job they needed to do.”
Ava Choate paced the Lady Lions’ attack with seven kills trailed by six from Hannah Deen, five each from Miranda Northcutt and Aniah Hines, four from Ibis Alvarado, three each from Aubrie Felux and Emma Ringler, and one from Kassidy Wooten.
Alvarado served eight of Brownwood’s 23 aces followed by Deen with five, Wooten with four, Felux and Ringler with two each, and Hines and Choate with one apiece.
Alvarado also recorded 25 assists.
Defensively, Brownwood received 21 digs from Wooten, nine from Alvarado, eight from Deen, six from Choate, two from Felux and one each from Hines and Northcutt.
At the net, Northcutt and Hines each logged three blocks and Choate registered a pair.
Brownwood controlled the first set, leading by as many as 10 points, 17-7, before notching the victory.
The second set got away from the Lady Lions, but Brownwood was able to regroup and rebound in the third and four sets to return to the win column for the first time since Aug. 13.
“We went through some adversity in the second set,” Smith said. “We started off on top and let them creep back and they took the second set from us. We came back and buckled down and really took care of business from there.”
The Lady Lions (3-12) will be back in action at 6 p.m. Friday at Midland Christian.
