ABILENE – In their first meeting, the Brownwood Lady Lions chalked up seven goals against the Snyder Lady Tigers to start the season with a victory. During the rematch in the Region I-4A bi-district round of the girls soccer playoffs, the Lady Lions equaled their previous scoring feat in just one half en route to a 10-0 triumph over Snyder Friday at Shotwell Stadium.
The District 4 second-seeded Lady Lions (11-4) needed just 16 seconds to score the only goal they needed against District 3 third-seed Snyder (4-15), as Molly Oliver found the net with an assist from Tessa Goodwin for a quick 1-0 lead. Watts Jones added the second goal just 5:24 into the contest, which became a recurring theme throughout the contest.
“I think the girls came out lights out and they were ready to go from the beginning,” said Lady Lions first-year head coach Alexis Mosqueda. “We got off the bus and we didn’t have much time to warm up so I told them that we had to start fast and that’s what we did. They came out and they scored right off the bat, so we had the lead secured and then we could play our game.”
Naysa Leach the scored the first of her three goals with 19:43 left in the first half, while Kennedi Johnson added the fourth goal with 16:10 remaining before intermission.
With 8:42 to go in the first half, Leach tacked on her second goal, then Emily Carnes scored with 5:49 left and Goodwin found the net at the 4:42 mark – completing the first-half scoring.
“In the second half I told them it needed to be more of a possession game and that’s what they did,” Mosqueda said. “They adjust well to everything I always tell them and I’m just so proud of the way they played.”
Leach completed her hat trick 6:02 into the second half, Oliver added her second goal with 29:36 remaining and Sydney Stewart capped the scoring with 18:05 left on the clock.
“We got a lot of the younger girls in today,” Mosqueda said. “It gives them an opportunity they haven’t seen yet. A lot of sophomores that were freshmen last year have never been to a playoff game because of COVID.”
Defensively, Tarynne Delap recorded a pair of saves for Brownwood – one with 12:13 left in the first half and the second just 32 seconds into the second half.
Next up for the Lady Lions is District 1 champion San Elizario (14-1) – coming off a 13-1 bi-district win over Borger – in the second round at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Midland’s Grande Communications Stadium.
