The Brownwood Lady Lions pieced together one of, if not the most prolific offensive performance in the history of the girls soccer program Tuesday night at Gordon Wood Stadium while remaining undefeated on the season.
Five different players scored as the Lady Lions rolled to an 11-0 triumph over the Lampasas Lady Badgers, improving to 4-0-1.
Kennedi Johnson led the charge with four goals, Watts Jones tacked on three, Molly Oliver chipped in a pair, and Priscilla Sanchez and Jacklyn Lewis also scored for Brownwood.
“Everyone was connecting,” Lady Lions second-year head coach Alexis Mosqueda said of the offense. “The midfield was connecting with the forwards, even when we dropped it back to the defense they were connecting. A lot of the younger girls got in and got some time and the energy never changed no matter who I put on the field. That just shows how much the girls have been working and I’m excited to see what else they can do.”
Oliver opened the scoring just 1:41 into the contest, and with 5:56 off the clock Johnson scored to push the lead to a comfortable 2-0. The Lady Lions scored twice more in the first half on Johnson’s second goal with 10:25 remaining, then Jones found the net with 30 seconds left for a 4-0 halftime cushion.
Brownwood started the second half just as quickly as Jones scored 1:38 after intermission, while Oliver again found the net 6:45 into the second half. Leading by six goals, Sanchez scored with 27:39 left then Lewis lit up the scoreboard with 21:20 to go.
Johnson scored the next two goals on assists from Jones, including one on a corner kick, then Jones capped the scoring with 59 seconds left in regulation.
Defensively for the Lady Lions, Allorah Franks and Jenzen Constancio teamed up in goal for the shutout.
“The defense did a great job,” Mosqueda said. “Ibis Alvarado and Reagan Ratliff really work well in the middle together and as long as we have them connecting r defense works great. Lampasas was a very high energy team and I commend them on that. She’s done a great job with that program and they did not stop fighting.”
A busy weekend awaits the Lady Lions at the Salado tournament Thursday through Saturday. Brownwood faces Fredericksburg at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Bay City at 5:45 p.m. Thursday and China Spring at 3 p.m. Friday. The tournament will conclude Saturday with seeding games.
“We have a long week ahead of us, we’re going to the Salado tournament that always has quality players and I told girls in the pre-game they needed to set the tone for the week,” Mosqueda said. “As soon as we’re going into a situation where we’re playing a lot of games, I want the girls to have the right mindset going into it. The energy was here and I was really proud of the way the girls connected.”
