In their final tune-up ahead of the District 6-4A basketball opener at Mineral Wells Friday night, the Brownwood Lady Lions ran their win streak to eight games with a 57-29 triumph over Marble Falls Tuesday afternoon Warren Gym.
Brownwood (18-6), which is coming off its first TexasBank Holiday Classic Championship since 2018, has won 10th of its last 11 outings overall.
“I like where we are and where we’re headed, but we can’t be content,” said Lady Lions head coach Heather Hohertz. “We have to keep getting better, keep pushing forward, but they’re playing good basketball and having fun and that’s all you can ask for.”
The Lady Lions led Marble Falls (7-16) by a 17-4 count after one quarter, 32-16 at halftime and 50-20 after three periods.
“We started the game a little flat,” Hohertz said. “A 12 o’clock game is a weird time and we just played four games in three days coming off a break. We were a little lackadaisical from that, but they turned it on when they needed to and took care of business.”
Hannah Deen scored a team-high 14 points for the Lady Lions followed by Trinity Roberts with 10, Icess Hall with nine, Jade Morin and Miranda Northcutt with six apiece, Kate Tindol with five, Lanie Johnson and Adyson Neel with three points each and Nylah Hall sank a free throw.
The Lady Lions knocked down 34 percent (17 of 50) of their field goals, including 22 percent (4 of 18) of their three-pointers. Brownwood also sank 63 percent (19 of 30) of its free throws, grabbed 33 rebounds, recorded 14 steals, and committed just 12 turnovers.
For Marble Falls, Leslie Reynoso tallied 12 points before fouling out with six minutes left, while Adalynn Wood added nine, Kylie Roberts scored three, Rayleigh Crim and Lila Pangborn chipped in two apiece, and Caity Johnson added one point.
Brownwood’s District 6-4A opener is set for 5:45 p.m. Friday at Mineral Wells (15-7).
“We have to continue to play good defense, play hard and compete every game,” Hohertz said of the Lady Lions’ objectives going into league play. “Friday’s a big one going to Mineral Wells. We have to continue to travel well like we have. It’s always big to open district with a win and I think they’re ready for that challenge.”
