GRAHAM – The Brownwood Lady Lions lapped the field Thursday, more than doubling the point total of their near competitor en route to the District 6-4A Track and Field championship at Newton Field.
“We’ve had a good season all year but when you get to district you have to take care of business and do what you need to do and we honestly did better in some things than I expected us to,” said Lady Lions head coach Chelsy Lipsey. “I couldn’t be more proud of the girls. They’ve worked hard all year and they’re so deserving of this and I’m glad they’re getting to reap the rewards from it.”
The Lady Lions generated 256 points, 142.5 more than district runner-up Stephenville (113.5), as they finished first in 13 of the meet’s 17 events. Meanwhile, the JV Lady Lions also earned a 6-4A championship with 201 points in their draw, 41 more than second-place Brock (160).
“That just goes to show the depth that we have,” Lipsey said of the point totals. “We moved a JV girl up and the JV girls were still able to kill it on their score as well. We have a lot of girls that want to work hard and enjoy it, so it makes it fun for everybody.”
Lipsey added some of the more surprising performances at district included Kaydence Allen winning the 6-4A championship in the shot put, and Kate Tindol, Hannah Deen and Jentry Coalson sweeping the top three positions in the 300-meter hurdles.
In boys action, the Brownwood Lions came in third in the final team standings with 109 points, which trailed Stephenville (212) and Brock (127). Meanwhile, the JV Lions collected 84 points which left them in fourth place behind Stephenville (226), Brock (152) and Graham (91).
The Lady Lions and Lions varsity teams combined to secure 38 berths – 26 for the girls and 12 for the boys – in the 5-4A/6-4A area meet in Abilene on Friday, April 11, as the top four finishers in each event advance. The top four from area will then advance to the Region I-4A meet.
Below are the point-producing results from all Brownwood teams, and again the top four varsity finishers in each event move on to the area round:
