Kate Buchaman grabbed 11 rebounds and Tatum Walker added 10 more, but the Howard Payne women’s basketball team fell to the Austin Kangaroos 67-53 at home Friday.
Buchaman and Walker’s fantastic rebounding performances led the Yellow Jackets (2-6) in the contest. Buchaman tacked on six points and Walker added five points. Kiana Henning also helped out with 16 points, six rebounds and four assists.
Buchaman pulled down four offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Howard Payne, grabbing 11 boards and turning them into three second chance points.
The Howard Payne defense held Austin shooters to just 39.7 percent from the field. The Yellow Jackets also kept Avory Miller to 3-of-14 shooting and 10 points in the game. The Kangaroos did not get many second opportunities on the offensive end, as they grabbed only three offensive rebounds and scored zero second chance points while Howard Payne pulled down 26 defensive rebounds.
How It Happened
After falling behind 6-0, Howard Payne went on an 11-0 run with 6:39 left in the first quarter to take an 11-6 lead. The Yellow Jackets then added one point to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with an 18-12 advantage. Howard Payne got out and ran in the period, scoring four points on the break.
The Yellow Jackets could not maintain their lead in the second quarter and entered halftime trailing 28-22.
Howard Payne started to cut into the deficit after halftime, bringing it to 41-36 by the end of the third quarter. Howard Payne played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 14 points in the paint.
Howard Payne could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 67-53. Howard Payne fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 17 points.
