The Howard Payne University women’s basketball team hit key free-throws down the stretch to claim a 69-63 conference win over Concordia University Texas Saturday afternoon in the Brownwood Coliseum.
Howard Payne went a perfect 8 for 8 from the line in the final minute of the game to secure the 69-63 league victory over Concordia. HPU’s Asia Mitchell led the final effort going 6 for 6 at the free-throw line (8 for 8 for the game) in the final minute.
With the Lady Jackets leading 29-21 at the half, the Tornados outscored HPU 16-9 in the third to get back in the game.
Both teams would shoot over 50% from the field in the final period, HPU at 50% (40.4% for the game) and CTX at 75% (46% for the game).
HPU was led by Taysie Trejo with 22 points on 6 of 9 shooting from the field, going 5 of 9 from behind the arc.
Trynadee Greenwell followed with 13 points, five rebounds, and three assists. Anna Beamesderfer added 11 points. Mitchell and Aja Holmes each grabbed six rebounds for the Lady Jackets.
Jordan Bravo led Concordia with 25 points followed by Mikayla Johnson with 12 points.
Howard Payne is now 6-6 overall and 2-4 in American Southwest Conference action. Concordia falls to 2-8 overall and 1-3 in league play. The Lady Jackets will play next on Dec. 29th at Southwestern Assemblies of God at 2:00 pm in Waxahachie, Texas.
