The Howard Payne University men’s basketball team was able to take down Concordia (TX) 93-85 at the Brownwood Coliseum on Saturday, December 16th.
After a back and forth first half, the Tornados were able to head into the break with a 43-42 lead. Concordia won the battle inside the paint during the first stanza, scoring 38 points with HPU only scoring 22
Despite Concordia’s bench outscoring the Yellow Jackets by 25, Howard Payne was able to regain the lead and defeat the Tornados 93-85. HPU regained control of the paint as they outscored Concordia 26-24 in the second half.
The HPU teamwork was on full display as they totaled 18 assists on the night led by Jarod Johnson with 6. The Yellow Jackets were able to convert 13 Tornado turnovers into 18 points as well. Armonie Ramey led the defense with six steals.
Howard Payne shot 46.6% (34-73) from the field while knocking down seven three-pointers as well. Concordia finished 39.8% (37-93) from the field as they struggled from beyond the arc, only converting on four of their 31 attempts.
Leading the way for the Yellow Jackets was Hudson Johnson who scored 26 points on 10-16 shooting. Following behind was Carter May who recorded a career-high 17 points to go along with five rebounds and three blocks. Jarod Johnson finished with 15 points with Armonie Ramey scoring 13 of his own. Rounding out the five double-digit scorers for HPU was Myles Brown with 10.
Donovan Stafford led the charge for the Tornados, scoring 16 points along with DJ Pigford adding 14 as well.
Howard Payne will head into Christmas break winning three straight conference games after starting the year 0-3. The Yellow Jackets will be back in action in the new year as they travel to Longview, Texas to take on LeTourneau with tip-off set for 7:30 PM.
