Armonie Ramey, Hudson Johnson and Trey Jackson all notched at least 20 points to help lead the Howard Payne men’s basketball team over the Arlington Baptist Patriots 124-120 at home Saturday.
The Yellow Jackets (6-5) had four players score in double figures, led by Ramey, who had a double-double with 32 points and 11 rebounds. Johnson tacked on 23 points and four assists and Jackson chipped in as well with 22 points, eight rebounds and two steals.
The Howard Payne offense was very productive from deep, pouring in 11 threes on 29 attempts. Johnson was the most prolific shooter for the Yellow Jackets, draining four treys in the contest.
The Howard Payne defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Saturday’s game, forcing 21 Arlington Baptist turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 33 points on the offensive end of the floor. Ramey’s three steals led the way individually for the Yellow Jackets.
How It Happened
After falling behind 26-20, Howard Payne went on a 9-0 run with 10:20 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Riley Fornerette, to take a 29-26 lead. The Yellow Jackets then added one point to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 60-56 advantage. Howard Payne did most of its first half damage in the paint, scoring 32 of its 60 points close to the basket.
Howard Payne kept its lead intact before going on a 9-0 run, finished off by Ramey’s layup, to grow the lead to 120-110 with 1:58 to go in the contest. The Patriots narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Yellow Jackets still held on for the 124-120 win. Howard Payne made the most of nine offensive rebounds to tack on 12 second chance points out of 64 total in the period.
