The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets dropped their first basketball of the 2023-24 campaign Wednesday, falling to Schreiner by a 79-71 count at the Brownwood Coliseum.
Trailing 41-35 at halftime, the Yellow Jackets (0-1) were outscored 38-26 over the final 20 minutes. Howard Payne trailed by as many as 15 points in the second half before making a late surge.
Howard Payne was outrebounded 55-34, which led to a 22-10 edge in second-chance points for Schreiner. The Yellow Jackets did force 20 turnovers and only committed 14, which resulted in a 21-8 edge in points off turnovers for HPU.
The Yellow Jackets shot 43 percent (28 of 65) from the floor, 39 percent (7 of 18) from three-point arc, and 50 percent (8 of 16) at the free throw line.
Ben Phillip led HPU with 19 points followed by Jarod Johnson with 12, Jordan Weeks with nine, Chase Glasper with eight, Carter May with seven, Armonie Ramey with five and a team-high 10 rebounds, Riley Fornerette with four, Myles Brown with three, and Hudson Johnson and Deven Bailey with two points apiece.
Schreiner knocked down 42 percent (30 of 71) of its shots, 34 percent (13 of 38) of its treys, and 40 percent (6 of 15) of its free throws.
The Mountaineers were led by Beau Cervantes with 28 points and 15 from Cristian Rodriguez. Kamden Ross chipped in eight points and a game-high 14 rebounds.
The Yellow Jackets are back in action at 6 p.m. Friday as they host Austin College.
