The Howard Payne University men’s basketball team fell 76-63 to Southwestern University in the Yellow Jackets home opener Tuesday evening in the Brownwood Coliseum.
Down 37-25 at the half, the Yellow Jackets were able to pull within two 43-41 with 13:45 left in the second half. From that point, Southwestern would use 50% shooting in the second half to secure the game 76-63.
HPU’s Harold Myart led all scorers with 14 points on 5 of 7 shooting along with five rebounds and four steals. Tyler Poag followed with 12 points, he was 4 for 4 from the field and 3 for 3 from the line.
Southwestern had five players in double-digits led by Preston Hannah with 13 points and Chris Smith with 12 points. Smith also grabbed 12 rebounds.
Howard Payne is now 1-1 overall and Southwestern stands at 1-1 on the year. The Yellow Jackets will play next on Friday at home versus the University of Dallas at 5:30 p.m.

Southwestern 61, Lady Jackets 52
Howard Payne University’s Bria Neal posted her first double-double of the season in a 61-52 home opener loss to Southwestern University Tuesday evening at the Brownwood Coliseum.
With almost all stats in the game being equal in the end, Howard Payne could not recover from a 13-point second-quarter deficit. The Lady Jackets shot just 15.4% in the second quarter but would best Southwestern shooting from the field in the second half.
With the game a 31-19 Southwestern lead at the half, the Lady Jackets would outscore the Pirates 15-13 in the third and 18-16 in the fourth.
Howard Payne was led by Bria Neal with a game-high 16 points and 12 rebounds. Neal was 6 for 7 from the free-throw line. Anna Beamesderfer followed with 12 points. Kiara Green had nine rebounds and Katlyn Ward dished out three assists.
Southwestern was led by Akyra Hodges with 14 points and Aniyah Burke with 12 points.
Howard Payne is now 0-1 to start the season, Southwestern stands a 2-2 overall. The Lady Jackets will play next on Thursday at home versus Barclay College at 5:30 p.m.
