The #12 Brownwood Lady Lions’ second three-game win streak of the season reached its conclusion Friday as the Burnet Lady Bulldogs spoiled Senior Night with a five-set victory at Warren Gym.
The Lady Lions were dealt a 22-25, 25-23, 25-23, 20-25, 15-11 defeat by Burnet to slip to 6-2 on the season.
“We had 16 serving errors and 23 hitting errors,” said Lady Lions second-year head coach Allison Smith. “No matter how good a team you are you’re never going to win giving away that many points. We got outworked on the court and that’s not acceptable. We’ll fix it though. This team is too good to stay down.”
Brownwood’s four seniors – Katelyn Windham, Ashlyn Storm, Caitlyn Moody and Becca Church – were recognized for their contributions to the volleyball program prior to the start of the match.
Jaylen Savage paced the offensive effort with 15 kills followed by 11 from Windham, 10 from Storm, eight each from Olivia Fowler and Tessa Goodwin, five from Kylie Morris, two from Church and one kill by Gracie Boswell.
Goodwin dished out 34 assists, Church added 15, Ashlyn Harris chipped in six and Windham was credited with one.
Goodwin also served six aces trailed by two each from Fowler and Windham and one apiece from Boswell and Moody.
Defensively, Moody logged 41 digs followed by Fowler with 18, Goodwin with 16, Boswell with 14, Windham with 12, Church and Savage with four apiece, Morris and Storm with two each and Harris tallied one.
At the net, Savage collected five blocks, Storm added three, and Church, Goodwin and Windham chipped in one apiece.
“We played tense once the girls realized they weren’t going to get another sweep,” Smith said. “Burnet has a great, scrappy team and it was a good match but we have a lot to fix based off the stats we produced tonight.”
The Lady Lions (6-2) have a chance to avenge their loss as they visit Burnet at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
