The Brownwood High fall tennis team opened its 2023 slate in well over 100-degree heat and emerged with a 16-3 home victory over Big Spring Saturday.
Leading the charge for Brownwood were the boys doubles duos and girls singles competitors, who swept all nine of their combined matches.
Picking up doubles wins for the Lions were No. 1 River Prado and Tyler Mitchell (8-6 over Matthew Salazar and Joaquin Arguello), No. 2 Caleb Dietlin and Wesley Goodrich (9-8 [7-5] over Gavin Corley and Kaiden Roberts), and No. 3 Blake Hutchins and Eric Waldrop (8-2 over Caedin Gutierrez and Alfredo Luna).
Notching singles victories for the Lady Lions were No. 1 Emma Delgado (8-4 over Alli Hillhouse), No. 2 Ashlyn Bundick (9-8 [7-5] over Brianna Landin), No. 3 Claire Meinecke (8-4 over Mariel Chavez), No. 4 Ihana Figueroa (8-3 over Spencer Patterson), No. 5 Anna Daniel (8-1 over Natalie Gomez), and No. 6 Jazzmyn Sanchez (8-1 over Rayne Owen).
In girls doubles action, adding wins were No. 2 Figueroa and Daniel (8-0 over Chavez and Patterson) and No. 3 Sanchez and Avery Mair (8-0 over Gomez and Owen).
In singles play for the boys, victories were claimed by No. 1 Prado (8-4 over Salazar), No. 3 Waldrop (8-6 over Corley), No. 4 Eric Smith (9-8 [7-2] over Roberts), and No. 6 Dietlin (8-1 over Shawn Olague).
Smith and Meinecke also teamed up for mixed doubles triumph (8-1 over Abby Walker and Olague).
The Lions and Lady Lions were back in action Saturday afternoon at home against Peaster, where they dropped a 16-3 decision.
Collecting the wins for Brownwood were Prado in No. 1 boys singles (8-1 over Dunn), the No. 3 girls doubles team of Sanchez and Mair (8-3 over Hayward and Noah), and No. 6 Hutchins in boys singles (8-2 over Hau).
The next two matches for Brownwood are set for Tuesday in Marble Falls. The Lions and Lady Lions will square against host Marble Falls at 9 a.m. and battle Fredericksburg in a neutral court contest at 2 p.m.
