The Brownwood Lions and Lady Lions defeated Big Spring, 12-7, and fell to Fredericksburg, 18-1, in non-district tennis action Saturday at the Brownwood High School Tennis Complex.
“The kids are working hard and still trying to find what works,” said Brownwood tennis head coach Dalton Hutchins. “ We haven’t played with a full-strength lineup on the girls side yet due to some injuries. I’m hopeful that will happen next week against Lampasas.”
Against Big Spring, Brownwood won five of seven doubles matches to grab the early momentum.
For the Lions, No. 2 Trine Baugh and Chance Pinkney knocked off Alfredo Luna and Om Patel, 8-4, and No. 3 Andre Martinez and Aiden Oplotnik downed Ashton Hughes and Micah Thomas, 8-1.
The Lady Lions received wins from No. 2 Anna Daniel and Amy Deechaleune (8-2 over Natalie Gomez and Daniella De Leon) and No. 3 Shari Ray and Makenzie Williams (8-4 over Spencer Patterson and Rayne Owen).
The mixed doubles match also went in Brownwood’s favor as Ihana Figueroa and Eric Smith upended Kacie Mistract and Zack Robles, 8-2.
In singles competition, the Lions picked up four victories by No. 2 Smith (8-1 over Luna), No. 3 Blake Hutchins (8-2 over Jared Garcia), No. 4 Baugh (8-1 over Patel) and No. 5 Oplotnik (8-1 over Hughes).
On the girls side, singles triumphs were collected by No. 4 Deechaleune (8-2 over Gomez), No. 5 Williams (8-2 over Owen), and No. 6 Jami Patterson (8-2 over De Leon).
The only win against Fredericksburg was earned by Oplotnik (9-7 over Holland) in No. 5 boys singles.
The Lady Lions and Lions (4-4, 1-0) resume District 7-4A tennis action at 4 p.m. Thursday as they host Lampasas.
