In a weather-shortened match, the Brownwood High tennis team opened District 6-4A competition with a 10-2 home victory over Glen Rose Tuesday afternoon.
Playing for the first time since Aug. 27, the Lions swept their three doubles matches and the four singles matches that were completed.
Notching wins were doubles duos Peter Le and River Prado (6-7[4], 6-4, 10-6) over Vit Guldan and Marc Iglesias Benet) in the No. 1 spot, Taevion Nickerson and Tyler Mitchell (6-1, 6-0 over Jacob Thrasher and Jose Saatedra) in the No. 2 position, and Wesley Goodrich and Eric Waldrop (6-2, 6-1 over Jackson Turner and Jace Young) in the No. 3 slot.
In boys singles play, wins were claimed by No. 3 Mitchell (6-2, 6-2 over Gottfried), No. 4 Nickerson (6-0, 6-1 over Thrasher), No. 5 Eric Smith (6-0, 6-2 over Young), and No. 6 Waldrop (6-0, 6-1 over Saatedra).
For the Lady Lions, the doubles teams of No. 1 Madeleine Goff and Emma Delgado (6-0, 6-2 over Angelina Saavedra and Ali Moss) and No. 2 Claire Meinecke and Raylei Hickey (7-6[3], 6-2 over Kendal Rush and Alexis Rynders) landed in the win column.
Also, the mixed doubles tandem of Smith and Ihana Figueroa were victorious over Gottfried and Jewell Morris, 6-2, 6-2.
The Lions and Lady Lions (6-3, 1-0) are back in action Sept. 15 against San Saba, and resume the District 6-4A slate Sept. 22 vs. Lampasas – with both matches in Brownwood.
