DUBLIN – The Comanche Indians, ranked No. 10 in Class 3A Division II by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football, remained undefeated and kept the Bangs Dragons winless in the process in a lopsided 70-0 decision Friday night.
In a game moved to Dublin due to thunderstorms the previous weekend that damaged Comanche’s stadium, the Indians (2-0) generated 519 yards of total offense – 347 rushing and 172 passing – against the Dragons (0-2) defense.
Sawyer Wilkerson rushed for 239 yards and four touchdowns on just 16 carries – an average of 14.9 yards per tote – to spark the Comanche offense. Colt Schwertner finished with 59 yards on the ground while quarterback Layden Welch added 27 yards and a touchdown and Cayden Davis chipped in 22 yards with a trip to the end zone.
Through the air, Welch connected on 5 of 7 passes for 172 yards and three touchdowns. Raymond Crossland caught two scoring tosses totaling 57 yards, Kyler Beaty added a 77-yard scoring reception, Schwertner hauled in a 20-yard reception and C.T. Buford made an 18-yard catch.
On the defensive side of the ball, Diego Gutierrez recorded 12 tackles and returned an interception for a touchdown for the Indians; Boswell tallied eight tackles and two sacks; and Ezequiel Medrano notched four tackles and recovered two fumbles. Manuel Ortiz also collected eight tackles and Marc Cuevas recovered a fumble as well.
Bangs was limited to 132 yards of total offense – 109 on the ground and 23 through the air – and committed the game’s only turnover.
Ethan Ethridge rushed for 40 yards trailed by quarterback Kenny Cole with 27, Hunter Hudnall with 17, and Skylar Minshew with 10 yards.
Cole completed 5 of 17 passes for 23 yards with one interception as Kade Minshew grabbed a 13-yard reception, Ethridge added an 8-yard catch, Ethan Hager pulled down a 4-yard pass and Brayden Gatlin caught two for -2 yards.
Defensively, Cason Tidwell and Hunter Crowell led Bangs with seven tackles each followed by four from Ethridge.
Next week, the Dragons open the home portion of their schedule with their homecoming game against Grape Creek (0-2), which fell to Christoval, 14-8, Friday night. Meanwhile, the Indians venture to Early (1-1), where the Longhorns will attempt to bounce back from a 48-14 road loss to Tolar in Week 2.
