Brownwood News – The Brownwood City Council on Tuesday morning discussed the ability of city employees, who have a state license to carry a handgun, to be able to conceal carry a handgun while on duty.

In opening remarks from City Manager, Emily Crawford, she pointed out that this subject has been a topic of conversation for several years with city staff and administration.

Crawford said the city has researched policies from Abilene and San Angelo and has drafted a policy, personnel rule and a firearms workforce safety course.

According to the city, the goal of the conceal carry policy is to provide an additional level of safety for employees.  It was noted that various job duties must be taken into consideration and ability of employees to conceal carry without interference or distraction from performing their essential job duties.

As an example, how would firemen conceal carry given the bunker gear they wear when on a call?  A few firemen were in attendance at the Council meeting.  Fire Chief Eric Hicks briefly addressed his plan should conceal carry for city employees happen.  “Years ago I was involved in an active shooter situation so I know the importance of this kind of thing happening out there in the public.  We’ve already been in talks with making plans to secure our weapons if this comes to fruition,” Hicks said.  Lock boxes would be placed on fire vehicles so that firemen could lock their weapon in the box when needed.

Authorization to carry would have to be approved by the Department Head, City Manager and Chief of Police following successful completion of an eight (8) hour safety course.

There was no action taken by Council at this time. Based on Council input, a final proposal will be presented for Council action in a future meeting.
