Mr. J. G. Goodwin, a native son of Coleman, passed away last May in Long Beach, California at the age of 87.

Memorial services with military honors will be held graveside at 11:00 am, Saturday, November 9, 2019 at the Coleman City Cemetery, with Pastor Richard Jackson officiating.  Services will be under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

J. G. was born in Coleman on July 17, 1931 to Albert Goodwin and Thelma Scott Goodwin.   J.G. spent most of his childhood in the White Chapel community and the City of Coleman – where he graduated from Coleman High School in 1948.  J. G. subsequently attended Abilene Christian College before joining the US Navy at the onset of the Korean War, during which he served as a sonarman aboard the U.S.S. Mainstay.  After the war, J.G. was honorably discharged and he went on to marry Carlene Roquemore Goodwin in Long Beach, California on May 12, 1955. J.G. and Carlene settled down in Long Beach and raised three children.  He earned a bachelor’s degree in physical science from California State University Long Beach and worked in manufacturing, operations, and quality control management roles.

J. G. was a loving, caring, patient, and devoted husband and father, and a committed Christian.  He led by example, was always optimistic, and was committed to helping, guiding, and bringing out the best in his children.  J. G. told us many stories about growing up in Coleman – about hunting at Hords Creek, playing football and running track for Coleman High School, his extended family in and around Coleman – the Goodwins and the Scotts, and generally what life was like back then.

Survivors include J.G.’s wife, Mrs. Carlene Goodwin of Long Beach, CA; three sons: Jonathan Goodwin and wife JoAnn of Woodlands, CA, David Goodwin of Long Beach, CA, and Timothy Goodwin and wife Rosie of Highlands Ranch, CO; five grandchildren: Jamie, Jason, and Joshua Goodwin of Woodlands, CA, and Connor and Juliana Goodwin of Highlands Ranch, CO; nephew Richard Goodwin of Cedar Creek, TX and niece Roberta Walker of Evadale, TX.  J.G. was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
