BrownwoodNews – Hispanic Heritage Month, September 15 – October 15, is an opportunity to reflect upon the richness that those of Hispanic background and heritage bring to our Texas culture. It’s an opportunity to appreciate diversity within our community. It’s also a time to think about children from that culture who are removed from their homes due to abuse and/or neglect.

Do they hear the language they are accustomed to hearing in their own home? Do they have food there that they are accustomed to eating? Do the temporary caregivers know about religious beliefs and traditions that are important in the family of this child? If the child is fortunate enough to have a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA), they have a consistent, safe, adult presence in their lives from the time they enter care until they are again in a safe, nurturing permanent home.
If you have a passion for the well-being of children, are willing to undergo background checks, participate in in-depth training, can communicate effectively orally and in writing, and are over 21, please consider becoming a CASA volunteer and impacting the life of a child or children from our community. Minority advocates are especially needed, as are men.
CASA in the Heart of Texas invites you to CASA 101, an information session, in which you will learn more about CASA, the importance and duties of advocate volunteers, the requirements, and the process of becoming a court appointed special advocate. “You don’t have to be of Hispanic heritage or be bilingual, be African-American, or be a man to come, but please don’t hesitate to come if you are. Our children need all of us”states Joanne McCraw, recruiter/trainer for CASA in the Heart of Texas
