Written by Ben Cox – A clubhouse has opened in Brownwood that has a single admittance policy, a diagnosis of mental illness and a desire to learn to work past it.

New Hope Clubhouse currently meets on Mondays in a room to the side of the Brownwood Manor. Members of the group work alongside peer support specialists in handling their diagnosis and relearning basic skills that may have been forgotten, all with a focus on recovery.
Recovery is a word often used in 12 step programs, and not very commonly associated with mental illness, but the group wants to change that. “Recovery is about having a life that I am in control of, getting my life together, having that good feeling about myself” says one member, who will be referred to as W. (No names will be used in this article out of respect for the privacy of Clubhouse members)
One of the facilitators of the group, C, says this system is a great way for people with mental health diagnoses to return to being autonomous, productive members of society. She has given up a day at work each week in order to part of the group, but to her it’s worth it. “I believe that in the long run, this investment matters.”
Almost six and a half million Texans, or one in five, have been diagnosed with mental health issues. The amount of state residents who are unable to afford any kind of help is close to 40 percent of those diagnosed.
While not a treatment facility, the Clubhouse is a place for those who are trying to reconnect with society. It also provides a place to relearn skills and practice them in a real world environment, without fear of judgement.
The group is currently working towards 501-C3 status, and is saving money to open a commercial bank account so they can establish themselves in Brown County. The plan for the Clubhouse is to find a permanent location, gain accreditation, and expand their reach to the seven counties that are also served by the Center For Life Resources.
As W said “There’s hope that we can all get better and do well.” The New Hope Clubhouse currently meets Mondays from 1pm to 4pm, and can be reached through their facebook page. Monetary donations are not currently being accepted, but office equipment and other items are needed.
