Brownwood News – On Saturday, March 10th, at approximately 11:15 p.m., Officer Rodriguez with the Brownwood Police Department was dispatched to the Brownwood Regional Medical Center regarding a welfare check. Communications reported that a male subject was passed out inside a parked vehicle.

According to reports, Officer Rodriguez located the vehicle and observed a man sleeping in the driver’s seat. On the center console beside the driver, Officer Rodriguez observed a clear plastic baggy sitting on the center console that appeared to contain a leafy substance consistent with marijuana.
The officer woke the driver and identified him as 58 year old Stephen Barbaree, of Bangs. In Officer Rodriguez’s report, Barbaree denied having an illegal narcotics inside his vehicle. A communications check revealed that Barbaree had a warrant from the State of Texas for a parole violation. Stephen Barbaree was arrested for the warrant and the marijuana was retrieved from the vehicle. Also located inside the vehicle was approximately 8 grams of suspected methamphetamine. A charge of Manufacture/Delivery of a Controlled Substance was added to the arrest record.

Friday, March 9th
- Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy Simpson assisted Investigator Gover with a warrant service at 3rd Street in Brownwood. The warrant was for Roseann Lopez Ortega. During a search of Ortega, 0.4 grams of methamphetamine, a semi-clear glass methamphetamine pipe, and a cut straw containing methamphetamine residue was reportedly located. Along with the warrant, Roseann Lopez Ortega was arrested for Possession of Controlled Substance PG1 < 1 gram, State Jail Felony.
Saturday, March 10th
- 8:55 a.m. Brownwood Police conducted a traffic stop in the 1500 block of Main Boulevard in Brownwood, which resulted in the arrest of 38 year old Rocky Martinez of Brownwood, for Possession of a Controlled Substance PG 3 < 28G.
- 1:00 p.m. Officer Jared Spohn with the Brownwood Police Department attempted to stop a vehicle in the 300 block of Victoria Street for an observed traffic violation. The vehicle refused to stop and attempted to evade officers for several blocks. Eventually the vehicle was located, unoccupied, at a residence behind the Brownwood Coliseum. Investigation is on-going.
- 8:09 p.m. Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy Jose Rodriguez was dispatched to Dublin Drive in Brownwood in regards to an accidental discharge. After further investigation, the complainant’s neighbor had a friend who accidently discharged her firearm inside the apartment going through the wall into the complainant’s apartment. No one was hurt or struck by the bullet when the incident occurred. A report was made.
Sunday, March 11th
- 4:30 a.m. Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy Jose Rodriguez was dispatched to the intersection of FM 2126 / FM 2525 in Brownwood in regards to a suspicious vehicle stopped at the stop sign heading south. The complainant advised the vehicle was parked at the stop sign for at least one hour and believed the driver of the vehicle was passed out. While on the phone with dispatch, the complainant stated the vehicle started slowly moving into the intersection and eventually struck a tree on the other side of the street causing minor damage to the vehicle. The driver, identified as Joshua Soto, was not injured, but was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated.
- 7:11 p.m. Brownwood Police conducted a traffic stop on a silver SUV, for failing to indicate the intent to turn. During the course of this stop, narcotics were found in the vehicle. Samantha Hellinger, 52 years old of Brownwood, was arrested for Possession of a Controlled Substance PG1 <1G, in a drug free zone, and Possession of Marijuana<2oz; both passengers were also arrested arrested for outstanding warrants.
