Life According to Kiera: Vanished… It's Complicated

Written by Rowonna McNeely – Yesterday afternoon, Aaron was in the kitchen cooking dinner and I was working at my computer. Kiera strolled in from her room and stood by my desk. “Mom, I’m vanished!” She exclaimed.

Eyebrows raised, I stopped typing and turned to face my daughter. “You’re vanished?” I questioned.

Widening her eyes as she emphasized her next words, she stated, “Vanished! When will dinner be ready?”

Aaron, who had overheard the conversation, paused in the kitchen doorway. “You mean… famished.” He stated and explained. “Vanished means you disappeared.

She turned her back to me and I watched as she shook her head at Aaron. “Vamished. I’m vamished.” She attempted again.

I ducked my head to hide the grin on my face and listened to Aaron enunciate the word again. “Famished. Famished means you are starving.”

Kiera trailed after him into the kitchen. “Yes! I am vamished!” She announced emphatically.

I laughed to myself and turned back to my work, curious who was going to win that battle.

A few days ago, we were in the swimming pool relaxing. Well, I say relaxing. Kiera doesn’t really do relaxing when we are in the swimming pool. She is constantly coming up with different games for us to play… and they are never simple.

For example, one day we played with the water guns in the pool. Kiera handed out the weapons and gave me a shield. Technically it was a kick board but I was the only one with a shield! Since it was Kiera and Aaron against me, I was ecstatic to have an advantage.

I held my shield up and stuck my tongue out at Aaron. Then Kiera finished explaining her rules. “Now, my gun has a laser and can shoot through anything, even your shield.”

I lowered my shield while Aaron stuck his tongue out at me.

Now back to a few days ago. We were in the pool and had started a game of hot potato, except we were tossing two balls between the three of us and counting to 10. Pretty basic rules, whoever had the ball when we reached 10 lost.

We had played several rounds when Kiera piped up. “I have an idea! How about Dad swims under the water and we will throw the ball and count to ten. If he gets back to us before 10, then the one with the ball is out.”

“But, honey, it’s a simple game.” Aaron explained. “We don’t want to complicate it.”

Kiera threw her hands up in the air and exclaimed loudly, “Well, what game can we complicate?”

This is my life… complicated or not, I wouldn’t change a thing.

Rowonna McNeely works with her husband, Aaron, at Willie’s T’s in the Art Department, regularly volunteers in the community, and has her hands full with her daughter, Kiera, along with two dogs and one cat.

Rowonna is a graduate of May High School (Go Tigers!) and grew up on a dairy farm. She enjoys reading, creating, swimming, and planning events. She’s also a bit of a klutz.
