Press Release from BMDD – Roland Soto has been hired as the Sports Coordinator for Brownwood. The Sports Coordinator position is funded jointly by the City of Brownwood, the Brownwood Chamber of Commerce, and the Brownwood Municipal Development District (BMDD).
Soto was selected from 26 applicants for the job. The selection panel unanimously chose him as the top candidate among all of the applicants.
“Roland is a very positive and capable person who will serve Brownwood well in his capacity as Sports Coordinator,” according to Guy Andrews, Executive Director of Economic Development.
Mr. Soto will begin his new assignment on January 3, 2017 and will be located on the second floor of the Depot (Harvey House) above the Brownwood Chamber of Commerce at 600 E. Depot in Brownwood.
Under the primary direction of the Executive Director–Economic Development, this position is responsible for recruiting sports events and tournaments to Brownwood that will allow utilization of our sports facilities including, but not limited to: The Bert V Massey II Sports Complex (that includes softball and baseball facilities), the Brownwood Soccer Complex, the Brownwood Coliseum, Gordon Wood Stadium, the Pecan Bayou Paddling Trail, the Bennie Houston Recreation Center, the Camp Bowie Recreation Center, the Camp Bowie Family Aquatic Center, the skateboard park, the disc golf course, and other parks and recreation facilities.

Mr. Soto will coordinate sporting events and tournaments with the City Parks and Recreation Department, Brownwood Chamber of Commerce, local and external sports organizations, and other involved organizations to ensure successful events that will market Brownwood as an excellent location for sports events and tournaments of all kinds.
Roland Soto is a Brownwood native and a 1996 graduate of Brownwood High School. He currently lives in Brownwood with his wife Esmeralda, and three daughters, Madeline, Marian, and Emma.
Growing up in Brownwood, he was active in several sports programs and attributes much of his love for sports to great childhood experiences he had here. Following this passion for sports, Roland left Brownwood in 2002 in pursuit of a career in Hospitality and Golf Resort Management. Roland attended and graduated from the Golf Academy of Arizona in Chandler, Arizona.
Returning to Texas in 2004, Roland has assisted in the openings of the Marriott Horseshoe Bay Resort and Hyatt Regency Lost Pines Resort & Spa, near Bastrop, TX. While working for Hyatt Resorts, he booked and coordinated over 450 golf events from 2006 – 2012 before being promoted to hotel group sales manager.
While living in Bastrop, Roland was involved in many different youth sports programs and a youth ministry leader with his wife Esmeralda at Bastrop Christian Outreach Center. They moved back to Brownwood in 2012 and have since served at Abundant Life Church as Pastors of Student Ministry.
He has worked at Sysco Food Corporation as a Marketing Associate since returning to Brownwood.
Upon accepting this new position, Roland said, “To say I am excited about starting this role, would be a tremendous understatement. One of the things we emphasize to our youth groups is the importance of making a difference and being of service to your community. I am looking forward to utilizing my past experiences to serve my community.”
