Monday Update 12:00 p.m.: According to Early Police, the female passenger that was taken by ambulance to Brownwood Regional Medical Center was later transported to Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene for a brain injury.  She and the other passenger who was flown by helicopter from the scene on Friday were reported to have been released from Hendrick Medical Center as of Monday morning.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as 47-year-old Gordon James Gilbert of Fredericksburg, Texas.  He was charged with driving while intoxicated, intoxication assault with vehicle and for failure to control speed.  Gilbert was released Saturday, August 27th on bonds totaling $7500.

Original article: A two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Early Blvd. and Sudderth Drive in Early injured two people and resulted in the arrest of the male driver of one of the vehicles Friday evening.

The accident occurred at approximately 7:45 p.m. when a Nissan Titan extended cab pickup pulling a flatbed utility trailer was traveling north on Hwy 377 and struck a Chevy Silverado extended cab pickup that was stopped for a red light at the intersection.  The impact sent the Chevy across the intersection and into the ditch, according to law enforcement.

A witness stated that the Nissan was traveling at a high rate of speed before it struck the other truck.

The male driver of the Nissan was able to exit the vehicle and walk; however, his two female passengers suffered serious injuries according to first responders on scene.  The passenger in the front seat was air lifted to Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene for treatment while the passenger in the back seat was transported to Brownwood Regional Medical Center.  The occupants of the Chevy truck were shaken but appeared to be uninjured and refused medical treatment, according to first responders on scene.

The driver of the Nissan, whose identity was not available at the scene, failed field sobriety tests and was arrested for driving while intoxicated, according to Early Chief of Police David Mercer.  He was taken to BRMC for a blood sample.

Early Police Department, Early Volunteer Fire Department, Lifeguard EMS and Air Evac Lifeteam responded to the accident scene.

Pictured above and below are photos of the damaged vehicles and the accident scene.
