ABILENE – The Brownwood Lions are headed back to the Region I-4A golf tournament, as are Lady Lions River Jones and Tristyn Garcia.

The Lions finished second in the final team standings at the two-day, 36-hole District 6-4A golf tournament, which concluded Tuesday at Live Oak Golf Course.

The Lions posted a composite score of 616, following an opening round 297 Monday with a 319 Tuesday. That score only trailed the 607 of the district champion Brock Blue team, and outdistanced the 625 of third-place Brock Gold. The Lions entered the second and final round with a mere one-stroke lead over Brock Gold, as only the top two teams advance to regionals.

Caleb Modawell placed second individually with a 149 total following an opening 72 and a closing 77, followed by Cobe Walker with a 152 after rounds of 73 and 79, Peyton Sharp with a 155 after rounds of 78 and 77, and Will Stewardson with a 160 following rounds of 74 and 86.

Meanwhile, the Brownwood Lady Lions came in third as team with a 771 two-day tally, which trailed regional qualifiers Glen Rose and Brock.

However, Lady Lions River Jones and Tristyn Garcia were the top two individuals not on a regional qualifying team, therefore they will advance to the regional tournament as medalists. Jones placed second overall with a 162 following rounds of 77 Monday and 85 Tuesday, while Garcia posted a 181 total with an opening 85 and a closing 96.

Also competing for the Lady Lions were London England with a 185 following rounds of 88 and 97, Geyer Stewardson with a 243 after rounds of 118 and 125, and Jacie Camp with a 268 after consecutive 134s.

The Region I-4A tournament will be held at Shadow Hills Golf Course in Lubbock April 14-15 for the girls and April 16-17 for the boys.

The Brownwood Lions posted a 616 team score, 9 shots off the pace of district champion Brock (607).
