Velma R. (Booger) Handy, age 88, of Coleman, passed away Saturday, May 30, 2015 at Holiday Hill Nursing Home. Funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 3, in Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Bob Martin, minister of Elm Street Church of Christ, officiating. Burial will follow in the Coleman Cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.
She was born Velma Rovena Gibson on March 12, 1927 in Milano, Milam County, Texas, a daughter of Byron George Gibson and Leola Isabelle Williams Gibson. She grew up in Brownwood where she attended school. She moved to Coleman in the 1940s and has lived here since that time. On April 26, 1971 she married Elgin Handy in Lawton, Oklahoma and he preceded her in death on July 28, 1994. Mrs. Handy was the secretary for the City Manager of Coleman and retired from that position after 46 years. She was a member of the Elm Street Church of Christ.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Billy Joe Adams and wife Kay of Coleman; three grandchildren, Natalie, Valerie and Glynda; five great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; several nieces and nephews including Georgann Humble of Winters and Sharon Allgood of Brownwood.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Bill Gibson and a sister, Margie Tinney.
Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 2, at Stevens Funeral Home, 400 W. Pecan Street, Coleman.
