
MARSHALL – The Howard Payne men’s basketball team came up short in a 101-75 loss to the Hardin-Simmons Cowboys at Ornelas Gymnasium Friday.
The Yellow Jackets (13-14) had four players score in double figures, led by Trey Jackson, who had 18 points and three steals. Riley Fornerette added 15 points, four assists and three steals and Armonie Ramey helped out with 14 points and three steals.
The Howard Payne offense was strong from beyond the arc, making eight threes on 30 attempts. Jackson hit two treys for the Yellow Jackets in the contest.
The Howard Payne defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Friday’s game, forcing 20 Hardin-Simmons turnovers while committing 14. Those takeaways turned into 25 points on the offensive end of the floor. Jackson’s three steals led the way individually for the Yellow Jackets.
How It Happened
Howard Payne struggled out of the gate, falling behind 47-36 heading into halftime.
Hardin-Simmons kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 49-36 advantage before Howard Payne went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Ben Phillip’s three, to shrink the deficit to 49-41 with 18:19 to go in the contest. Hardin-Simmons responded and outscored the Yellow Jackets the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 101-75. Howard Payne capitalized on nine Hardin-Simmons turnovers in the period, collecting 11 points off those turnovers.
