Hudson Johnson totaled 28 points and Mason McGowen added 22 and the Howard Payne men’s basketball team beat the Texas-Dallas Comets 93-88 at home Saturday.
Johnson and McGowen’s stellar scoring performances led the Yellow Jackets (9-11) in the contest. McGowen added three steals. Armonie Ramey also helped out with a double double of 14 points and 15 rebounds.
Ramey pulled down seven offensive rebounds to pace the Howard Payne offense which grabbed 18 boards and turned them into 12 second chance points.
The Howard Payne defense caused its share of mistakes in Saturday’s game, forcing 19 Texas-Dallas turnovers while committing 12. Those takeaways turned into 24 points on the other end of the floor. McGowen’s three steals led the way individually for the Yellow Jackets.
How It Happened
After falling behind 2-0, Howard Payne went on a 6-0 run with 18:50 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Johnson, to take a 6-2 lead. The Yellow Jackets then surrendered that lead and entered halftime down 46-42.
Texas-Dallas kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing an 88-81 advantage before Howard Payne went on a 12-0 run to seize a 93-88 lead with two seconds to go in the contest, The Yellow Jackets held onto that lead for the rest of the game for the 93-88 win. Howard Payne shot well from three-point range in the half, hitting seven shots from deep to score 21 of its 51 points.
