Around almost every turn, work continues on the improvements approved by voters during the Brownwood ISD Bond election of May 2023.
The multi-purpose indoor facility has recently started its rise as it will be used for football, band, baseball, softball, football, soccer, PE, and more, and Brownwood athletic director Sammy Burnett stated on Monday’s Brownwood Lions Coaches Show on KOXE that completion of the facility is anticipated to be August 2025.
“The steel is going up and it’s going to be big, and we’ve always known that, but to see it start to take shape, it reemphasizes just how massive project that is,” Superintendent Dr. Joe Young told Brownwood ISD Board of Trustees during Monday night’s meeting.
The Snodgrass facility renovations are complete and is open to students for weight training, and as well as indoor work, if needed, for soccer, baseball and softball.
The new bleachers and press box at Morris Southall Field, home of the Brownwood Lions baseball team, are being constructed this week as well.
The artificial turf playing surfaces and new fencing have been completed at both the baseball and softball fields and new lights for each are also on site and on the verge of rising. Construction continues on the new parking lot between the two fields, with the entrance way coming from Magnolia Avenue. All that construction is expected to be complete ahead of the baseball and softball seasons.
There will not be a permanent concession stand or restrooms for baseball this coming season, however, but there will be temporary alternatives for those in attendance.
With the conclusion of the Brownwood Lions football regular season this past Friday, work is already beginning on the stands at Gordon Wood Stadium, as well as the restrooms and concession stands, with all that work expected to be completed ahead of the 2025 football season.
Also during Monday night’s Brownwood ISD Board of Trustees meeting, Young told the Board, “If you have ever struggled up the ramp at Gordon Wood Stadium, you will struggle no more. The construction crew started today and the destruction crew is not far behind and the ramps will be gone. They’re going to be doing a lot of things out there between now and next fall, and the track and the field will be closed for everything but soccer. We’ll have more details as to where you will enter the stadium and where you will sit, there will be some bleachers on the track on the end by the field house, or bring your lawn chair.”
The final two phases of construction at Gordon Wood Stadium are as follows, per the Brownwood ISD:
- Phase 2 will begin November 2024. Schedule will include new concessions, bathrooms, visitor side and home side renovations, partial build of new press box.
- Phase 3 will begin after the 2025 season and will include finishing the press box and installing the new bleacher addition on the home side.
Also, Brownwood Middle School locker room improvements are scheduled to begin later this, Young told the Board Monday night.
