The Brownwood Lady Lions’ 2024 volleyball season reached its conclusion Tuesday night at Warren Gym with a 25-14, 25-14, 25-15 loss to the Graham Lady Blues.
Prior to the contest, the Lady Lions’ four seniors – Aubrie Felux, Miranda Northcutt, Jakayla Peek and Peyton Pena – were recognized for their contributions.
“The seniors have been awesome this year,” said Lady Lions second-year head coach Cheyanne Lovelady. “They’ve all been really good teammates and really good leaders. We’re definitely going to miss them next year.”
Against Graham, Felux led the charge with six kills trailed by four from Aniah Hines, three from Hannah Deen, two apiece from Northcutt and Jentry Coalson, and one each by Inylah Hall, Demayha Hooker and Trinity Roberts, who left with an ankle injury.
Icess Hall recorded a team-high 12 assists followed by Hines with six.
Felux served Brownwood’s only ace.
Defensively, Hines chalked up nine digs followed by Laine Johnson with seven, Maddi Scott with six, Felux and Sara Stubblefield with five apiece, four each from Deen, Peek and Icess Hall, three apiece from Hooker and Northcutt, two from Inylah Hall and one from Roberts.
At the net, Northcutt logged three blocks trailed by Hines with a pair and Hooker and Felux with one apiece.
The Lady Lions’ last district volleyball victory came on Oct. 19, 2021, which was also the last season in which Brownwood advanced to the playoffs.
Despite the struggles of an 0-10 record against District 6-4A competition, the Lady Lions finished the 2024 season with an overall record of 13-23 – two victories more than the previous two seasons combined.
“There was so much growth this year,” Lovelady said. “It may not look good from an outsider’s standpoint, but the knowledge and the growth shown by these girls all season has been tremendous. We’re going to go work this spring and take things to the next level next year. We’re going to lose some seniors that we’re going to miss, but we have girls ready for a chance to step in. We’re going to be a step ahead next year.”
