The Brownwood Police Department issued the following information Friday morning:

On Thursday, October 17, 2024, Brownwood Communications began receiving 911 calls regarding a Disorderly Conduct complaint at Chili’s Restaurant, 210 E Commerce. The calls increased to indicate that shots were fired at people.

Multiple police agencies responded to the scene and located a large group of people in the rear parking lot of the restaurant. This group was gathered around, and aiding, 35-year-old Alvaro Garcia Jr., of Brownwood, who was lying in the parking lot. Garcia was suffering from a gunshot wound to his right leg.

Information at the scene indicated that Garcia was at the restaurant with several family members when a male juvenile, 15 years of age, arrived. Both groups are familiar with each other and an argument began between the juvenile and a family member of Garcia. This argument increased as both groups left the restaurant.

As the groups merged in the rear parking lot, Garcia and the juvenile argued and threatened each other, which led to the juvenile pulling a pistol from his waist area and firing several shots at Garcia. The juvenile then fled the scene.

Garcia was cared for by members of the Brownwood Fire Department and AMR Ambulance personnel. He was care-flighted from the location to a hospital in Abilene.

At approximately, 12:45 a.m, October 18, 2024, the juvenile was located in the 1300 block of 13th St. and taken into custody on a directive to apprehend for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon.

It’s important to note that the information contained in the report is a summary. Specific details have been omitted for investigative/legal purposes.

The Early Police Department, Brown County Sheriff’s Office, Bangs Police Department, and Texas Department of Public Safety State Troopers all assisted on this call. This level of teamwork is greatly appreciated and demonstrates our commitment to the safety of our community.
