I recently came across a program that the American Legion has called Operation Comfort Warriors.“Operation Comfort Warriors represents the American Legion’s expression of gratitude to those who sacrificed to protect our freedoms”. As service members either continued their military careers or separated from active duty, there were hardships that came in the form of mental and physical wounds that occurred during their deployments. There was a high number of those that suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) during their deployments.
“The American Legion’s Operation Comfort Warriors program was created to provide non-essential items that would help wounded warriors in their recovery”. An example was provided: a wounded warrior in need of loose fitting clothing to help cover healing wounds to ease the pressure of burn wounds.
The “Big Picture” of Operation Comfort Warriors is: “The American Legion is contacted by Individuals, VA hospitals, warrior transition centers and communities with needs for wounded, injured, disabled or ill service members. Once a need is identified, the items are ordered by the Legion and delivered in an expeditious manner” to the wounded warrior. So from our example: your donated funds would be used to pay for and deliver loose fitting clothing to that wounded warrior.
“The success of the program relies entirely on donations, which are used to purchase items for the U.S. Service Members”.
