The Howard Payne Lady Jacket softball team picked up a pair of wins Friday afternoon, defeating Sul Ross State University 8-0 and 3-1.
Howard Payne started out the first game strong with an Abigail Hinojos RBI single sending Evangelina Tellez in to score. Then a 3 RBI triple from Rebecca McDaniel moved the HPU lead to 4-0 in the second inning.
Both teams remained scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when Mallory Wood scored on a passed ball giving the Lady Jackets momentum to put up 3 more runs in the sixth, ending the game on a run rule.
McDaniel went 2 for 3 at the plate with a triple, while Justine Farrell-Raborn recorded a stolen base for the Lady Jackets.
Howard Payne’s Haleigh Caraway got the win pitching a full six innings, charging Sul Ross’ Becky Anderson with the loss.
In game two of the double header Sul Ross put up the first run, but Howard Payne quickly answered back when McDaniel grounded out to first, sending Hinojos in for a run. A 2 RBI triple by Tellez then put the Lady Jackets up 3-1 in the bottom of the first inning.
No other runs would be necessary for the Lady Jackets to secure the win as Sul Ross remained unable to score. Kayla Castillo got the win and Sul Ross’ Becky Anderson posted the loss.
Farrell-Raborn went 2 for 2 on the game, recording 2 stolen bases along with Hinojos and Caraway who each had a stolen base. Ashley Silva doubled off the left field fence, while Tellez put up a triple.
Howard Payne moves to 6-11 on the season, and 3-5 in conference play, while Sul Ross remains winless on the year at 0-23.
The Lady Jackets will take on Sul Ross again on Saturday, March 27 in Brownwood starting at 11:00 am.
