The Brownwood Lions subvarsity football teams kicked off their 2024 campaigns with three games against Abilene Wylie, winning the two on the road and dropping the one at Gordon Wood Stadium:
Freshman Lions 43, Wylie 12
ABILENE – The Brownwood Freshman Lions dominated their season opener, jumping out to a 22-6 halftime lead, while mirroring their performance in the second half.
The Lions led 15-0 after the first quarter as, after a bad snap on a Wylie punt, Brownwood took over inside the Bulldog 10. Caden Wilson scored on a 3-yard run and added the two-point conversion.
Later in the quarter, Wilson broke free for an 81-yard scamper to the end zone and Aiden Jimenez added the PAT.In the second quarter, the Lions boosted the advantage to 22-0 when Christian Gray blocked a punt and Miles Jones recorded a 17-yard scoop and score. Jimenez added the extra point.
Wylie scored just before halftime, but the Lions took the opening possession of the third quarter and scored on an 8-yard pass from Wilson to Jimenez, who added the extra point. Wilson later scored again on a 3-yard carry, and Jimenez’s boot increased the lead to 36-6.
The Lions tacked on a final touchdown in the fourth period on a 3-yard run by Trent Buffington, and Jimenez’s kick resulted in the final 31-point margin.
Defensive standouts included Buffington with seven tackles and a sack; Hutton Malone with seven tackles; Gray with six tackles, including one for loss, and a blocked punt; Hudson Fry with four tackles and a forced fumble; and Boyd Diaz and Brody Bolton pounced on fumbles.

JV Lions 14, Wylie 8
ABILENE – In a back and forth defensive battle, Brownwood quarterback Riggs Gray tossed a pair of touchdowns and threw for over 100 yards in his first JV start.
The first Lions touchdown came on a 2-minute drill with 8 seconds left in the first half to Wyatt Wolf on a 30-yard fade route.
The second touchdown was on a jet sweep pass to Conner Cornelius for 50 yards on the opening drive of the second half to secure a 14-8 lead.
The Lions defense came up big with a fourth down stop inside the 5-yard line to end the third quarter, and then on the final drive of the game inside the Lions 40 yard line.
Wyatt Wolf also had an interception and three pass break-ups on defense.
The JV Lions will host Wall at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, following the freshman game at 5 p.m.

Wylie 28, Combined Team 16
The Brownwood Lions Combined Subvarsity squad surrendered the first two touchdowns before closing the gap to 14-8. Wylie tacked on two more touchdowns before the Lions added a final trip to the end zone in the waning seconds.
Cannon Calvert threw a touchdown pass to Hayden Christiansen, and Lajon Bush added a score on the ground, plus a couple of two-point conversions.
Jacob Green also contributed a solid night rushing the football and recorded two sacks, while other defensive standouts included Eduardo Hernandez, with five tackles and one for loss; Brayden Tlahuel-Torres with five tackles; Eli Waldrop with an interception and a tackle for loss; and Miguel Diaz, with a tackle for loss.
